Simplifying Ratios

In a Nutshell

To simplify a ratio, divide both sides by their highest common factor (HCF).

Simplifying a ratio works just like simplifying a fraction. You find the highest common factor of both parts and divide:

12:18  ÷6  2:312 : 18 \;\xrightarrow{\div\,6}\; 2 : 3

A ratio is in its simplest form when both numbers share no common factor other than 1.

The bar model below shows how the ratio looks before and after simplifying. The proportions stay the same, even though the numbers change.

Ratio bar model A bar split into 10 equal parts. 4 parts are shaded in the accent colour and 6 parts in a secondary colour, showing the ratio 4:6. 4 6 Ratio 4 : 6

Try entering 4:64 : 6, then 2:32 : 3. Notice the bar looks identical both times. That is because the ratios are equivalent.
